Conveyor Tensioning Solutions for the Mining Industry

Mining conveyors are the largest, longest and most demanding belt conveyors in industry. An underground mainline can run five kilometres; a surface overland system can be longer than the pit it serves. In that world, tensioning is not a detail — it is a core reliability and safety function.

Why Tensioning Is Different in Mining

Constant-Tension Hydraulic Systems (Underground Standard)

For long underground conveyors, the industry standard is a PLC-controlled hydraulic take-up that holds the belt at a preset tension. Two properties matter most:

Flame-retardant hydraulic medium. In gas-mine atmospheres the hydraulic fluid itself must not propagate flame. Water-glycol or emulsion fluids are standard; this is a certification requirement, not an option.

Voltage flexibility. Mine electrical networks commonly run 380 V, 660 V or 1140 V. A take-up system must be specified for the actual mine voltage — one of the first questions we ask.

Our ZYJ series (160–700 kN, up to 20 m stroke) is the workhorse in this class. For conveyors that also need belt recovery, the HYZJ integrated tensioner-winder saves space by combining both functions.

Winch Systems for Cold Climates

At high latitude and high altitude mines, winter temperatures defeat hydraulic systems: fluid thickens, seals harden, cold-start becomes unreliable. The ZJ electric-winch tensioner solves this by removing hydraulic fluid entirely — tension is applied through a wire rope by an electric winch, with up to 35 m of stroke.

For less extreme sites, the JZB hydraulic winch offers tensioning plus general winching duty in one unit — useful for maintenance teams that also pull cables, skids or other loads.

Smart VFD Tensioning for Intelligent Mines

The industry is moving toward intelligent mine systems: centralized control rooms, SCADA integration, remote supervision. The ZPJ series answers with variable-frequency-drive tensioning in a closed loop — tension adjusts continuously, data flows to the control system, and operators monitor tensioning from the surface.

Where a mine already runs a digital backbone, specifying a VFD tensioner with a communication interface avoids a second, incompatible island of automation.
